Description
The Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) is a North American butterfly that closely resembles the Monarch but is slightly smaller, with orange wings bordered in black and a distinctive black horizontal line across the hindwings, typically found in wetlands, meadows, and along streams.
Range
It is found throughout the state.
Similar Species
This species is a mimic of the Monarch, but the Monarch is bigger and the viceroy has a distinctive black line across the hindwing that is lacking in the Monarch.
Host Plants
Trees and shrubs including: Willow (Salix spp.), Poplar (Populus spp.), especially Cottonwood (Populus deltoides), Aspen (Populus tremuloides)
Flight
Overwinters in chrysalis, and can emerge as early as May and can fly until September.
