Description

The Silver-bordered Fritillary (Boloria myrina) is a small to medium-sized butterfly with bright orange wings featuring black spots and a distinctive silver-spotted border on the undersides of the hindwings, typically found in wet meadows, bogs, and open fields across northern North America.

Range

It is found throughout the state becoming extremely rare the further southwest you go.

Similar Species

Bog fritillary could be confused for Silver-bordered, but lacks the white marks on the wing margins.

Host Plants

main larval host plants: Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia), Marsh Violet (Viola cucullata), Lance-leaved Violet (Viola lanceolata)

Flight

Overwinters in chrysalis, and can emerge as early as late-May and can fly until early September
