Description

The Horace’s Duskywing (Erynnis horatius) is a small, dark brown skipper butterfly with faint pale spots on the forewings and subtle, lighter markings on the hindwings, commonly found in woodlands, gardens, and open areas across the eastern and southern United States.

Range

A rare stray from the southern US. It’s been sighted a half dozen times from the Twin Cities and south.

Similar Species

Juvenals is similar but Horace’s doesn’t have two large pale spots on the hinwing below.

Oaks (Quercus spp)

Flight

Migrates north in July and August.
