Description
The Hoary Elfin (Callophrys polios) is a small butterfly with brownish-gray wings and frosted white edges, giving it a “hoary” appearance, often found in dry, open habitats such as pine barrens, heathlands, and sandy areas across northern North America, where its caterpillars feed on bearberry and related plants.
Range
Localized populations in northern third of the state.
Similar Species
Brown elfin is very similar but does not have the “hoary” or grayish areas on the hindwing.
