Description

The Gray Copper (Tharsalea dione) is the largest copper butterfly in Minnesota with grayish-brown wings adorned with orange and black markings on the upper side and lighter undersides with black spots, typically found in open areas.

Range

Generally the southern and western parts of the state, but I did see one near Duluth, so probably anywhere with docks (rumex spp) the larval host plant. Look for it in prairie restorations, old fields, and open natural areas.
