Description

The Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis) is a small, dark brown butterfly with faint white spots on the forewings and a distinctive white fringe along the hindwing edges, commonly found in deserts, grasslands, and open areas across the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America. I’ve only seen this species in Minnesota one time, and those are the photos above.

Range

A rare stray to Minnesota and can sometimes be found in the southern 1/4 of the state.

Similar Species

None. If it has a strong white fringe on the hindwing, it’s Funereal.

Legume family (Fabaceae)

Flight

Overwinters in chrysalis, and can emerge as early as March and can fly until October (depending on the weather)
