Description

The Compton Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis l-album) is a medium-sized butterfly with orange-brown wings, dark markings, and a pale yellow border on the upper side, while the underside is mottled brown and gray, providing camouflage, typically found in woodlands and near streams across North America and Eurasia.

Range

North and east of a line from Rochester to Grand Forks.

Flight

Overwinters as an adult, and can emerge as early as March and can fly until October (depending on the weather)
