Description
The Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) is a small, widespread butterfly with pale white wings, marked by one or two black spots on the forewings and a faint yellowish underside, commonly found in gardens, fields, and urban areas around the world. It is introduced to the United States (including Minnesota) from Europe.
Range
It is found throughout the state.
Similar Species
Mustard White lacks dark spots on the forewing. The spring form of Mustard white has dark veins on the wings below, which the Cabbage white never has. The summer form of Mustard White is generally pure white, which might be confused with very worn Cabbage Whites. Cabbages Whites also tend to be closer to urban areas (but not always).
Host Plants
Larvae feed on mustard and cruciferous like cabbages, kale, radish, broccoli, and horseradish. It also feeds on invasive garlic mustard.
Flight
Overwinters as a chrysalis, and can emerge as early as March and can fly until November (depending on the weather)
