Description

The Appalachian Brown (Lethe appalachia) is a medium-sized butterfly with soft brown wings, two prominent black eyespots on the forewings, and a row of smaller eyespots on the hindwings, commonly found in shaded wetlands, swamps, and moist woodlands across eastern North America.

Range

Twin Cities and north in wet woods and forests.

Similar Species

Eyed Brown is very similar but many of the lines on the hindwing are smooth in Appalachian and jagged in Eyed Brown.

Tussock Sedge (Carex stricta), Other sedges (Carex spp.), Various wetland grasses

Late June through mid-September
