Description

The Aphrodite Fritillary (Argynnis aphrodite) is a medium to large butterfly with bright orange wings marked by black spots and a row of silver spots on the undersides of the hindwings, commonly found in open habitats such as meadows, fields, and prairies across much of North America.

Statewide.

Similar Species

Great Spangled Fritillary lacks an extra dark spot near the body on the forewing above. Aphrodite also has a reduced or absent cream band in the submargin on the hindwing below.

Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia), Bird’s Foot Violet (Viola pedata), Prairie Violet (Viola pedatifida), Other violet species (Viola spp.)
